Battle over Abigail Kawānanakoa’s estate ends, $100M to be put toward Native Hawaiian causes

The battle over Abigail Kawānanakoa’s estate has come to an end. Many considered Kawānanakoa to be Hawaii’s “last princess.” According to KITV, $100 million of her estate will be dedicated to Native Hawaiian causes.

Kawānanakoa died on December 11, 2022 at the age of 96. She was born in Honolulu in 1926 to parents William Jeremiah Ellerbrock and Lydia Liliuokalani Kawānanakoa, known to many as Princess Liliuokalani.

According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the battle over her estate, worth over $200 million, began years before she passed.

Last week, the dispute was settled. Millions of dollars will be distributed to various people including housekeepers and former employees. Kawānanakoa’s wife will receive $40 million. Another $100 million will be put toward Native Hawaiian causes.
