Top Texas engineering award goes to Rice University professor

An engineer from India has been recognized as one of the top rising researchers in Texas, NDTV reported.

Ashok Veeraraghava, professor at the George R. Brown School of Engineering at Rice University has been awarded the Edith and Peter O’Donnell Award, one of the most prestigious honors in all of Texas.

Veeraraghava developed a way to overcome the impact of scattering light due to fog, smoke, rain and human tissue. His multi-dimensional image sensors enabled the capturing of images that would otherwise remain invisible, Artistree explained.

“One familiar example is when you’re driving a car and it’s foggy, so you can’t see too far out. In this case, fog acts as the scattering medium. If you’re doing satellite imaging, clouds can act as the scattering medium. And if you’re doing biological imaging, it’s skin that acts as the obscurant so you can’t see blood cells or the structure of the vascular system, for example,” the award-winner said to the New Indian Express.

The award is presented by the Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology.

Veeraraghava is originally from Chennai, a Southern state in India. He received his Bachelor degree in electrical engineering from IIT Madras and master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park.
