Utah Assistant Attorney General Steven Wuthrich apologized after telling Salt Lake City council member Darin Mano to “kindly die and go to hell” in an email, NBC News reports.
Mano, Salt Lake City’s first Asian city council member, knocked on Wuthrich’s door Saturday. He was looking for a registered voter at the Wuthrich’s residence, not Wuthrich himself, ABC reports. Mano was appointed to his position. He hopes to become the first Asian American elect to the city council.
Wuthrich claims the knock disturbed his nap and prompted him to write angry email to Mano.
“I will do everything in my power to see you never get elected to any office higher than dog catcher,” Wuthrich wrote in his email to Mano, according to NBC News. “I hate you. I hate your family. I hate your solicitors. I hate your contributors. I hate your sponsors. Kindly die and go to hell motherf—–!!!!”

Mano called the email “inappropriate” and said in a Facebook post he felt compelled to share it publicly.
“As an Asian American and member of the LGBTQ+ community, I must stand up against hate speech and call it out when I see it,” Mano wrote.
He acknowledged that Wuthrich did not reference his Asian or LGBTQ+ identity but said the email “felt personal.”
Wuthrich apologized in a statement Tuesday, calling his words “civil and unprofessional.”
“From me personally, I apologize to Salt Lake City Councilman Darin Mano and his family. I never wished harm to Mr. Mano, his family or anyone associated with him. No parent, spouse or child should be subjected to such emotional outbursts. I am deeply sorry,” he said, according to NBC News.
