Mira Nadon, New York City Balley’s first Asian American principal dancer, is speaking out about the company’s “new era,” in an interview with CBS News.
According to 19th News, Nadon was named principal dancer back in February. She is just 21 years old.
Nadon’s father is White and her mother is from India. In an interview with 19th News, Nadon said her ethnicity was not an obstacle to success because she believes she is white-passing.
“I want to be open about the fact that I am very White-passing,” she said, adding, “I don’t necessarily think that my ethnicity and my background was ever necessarily used against me. So I am very lucky in that regard.”
Over the past few years, the New York City ballet has slowly begun integrating more dancers of color into its higher ranks. The young dancer is excited to be a part of change within the company.
“It does feel like a kind of new era in the company,” Nadon told CBS News, adding that “it’s a big honor and something to grow into.”
