People for American Way: Asian American & Latino Voters Boost Terry McAuliffe into Governor’s Office in Virginia

CATEGORIES

Terry McAuliffeExit poll results released by People for the American Way seem to indicate that Asian American and Latino voters provided the margin of victory for Democrat Terry McAuliffe in the race for Governor of Virginia.

McAuliffe won 48 to 46 percent over Ken Cuccinelli yesterday with 100 percent of the precincts reported.

But the People for the American Way exit poll found Asian Americans overwhelmingly voted for McAuliffe 63% to 34%. Latinos also voted for McAuliffe by a wide margin, 66 to 29.

The results have to be disappointing for Republicans who spent money specifically targeting Asian voters. The party has seen its support slipping among minorities and is just realizing that it needs to do better outreach to win those votes back.

Some are already saying its too late for the Republican party to regain the trust of minorities.

Exit polls from yesterday’s race indicate immigration was the most important issue determining their vote. 46 percent of Asian American voters listed immigration as the most important issue. 53 percent of Hispanics did the same thing.

You can read more detail about how the issues played a role in how Asian Americans and Latinos voted here.
