Indian American Today: South Asian Community Call for U.S. Postage Stamp Commemorating Diwali

posted by Randall

DiwaliLeaders from the United Nation joined the Indian American Community today in calling for the U.S. Postal Service to issue a stamp commemorating Diwali.

The Festival of Lights is observed by Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Jains, and Buddhists.

“As one of the world’s oldest religious holidays, it serves not only as a time for celebration, but also as an occasion for communities and families to convene in spiritual enlightenment. The practice of Diwali has survived political, economic and social changes throughout history, while always carrying the universal symbolism of the victory of light, goodness, knowledge and truth,” Congresswomen Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) said to the Indian American Today.

Others said the stamp would provide a badly needed source of revenue for the financially strapped Postal Service.
