Digital Journal: Chinese American Businessman Facing Trial in China Says He’s Been Tortured

CATEGORIES

China FlagA Chinese American businessman from Los Angeles who faces criminal charges in China has accused Chinese authorities of beating, kicking and starving him, reports Digital Journal.

Vincent Wu faces charges of leading a gang responsible for kidnapping its rivals, throwing acid on a judge and running an illegal gambling operation.

His family portrays him as a kind and charitable man who is being framed by his business rivals.

The US Embassy has been keeping a close eye on this case, but has not been allowed by Chinese authorities to see Wu. The Embassy declined comment citing privacy concerns.

“My dad is a really good person at heart, especially to the people who are farmers and have not enough money to go to school. He’s donated money to the elderly and to help build a road,” said Wu’s daughter, Anna Wu. “But in China, money speaks louder than law… if you want to bring someone down, you can bribe the police and certain people to make it happen.”

But his former business partner paints a different picture.

“He is a man with no morals and integrity,” Huang Xiaojun said in a phone interview. “He’s extremely good at playing or acting and confusing right and wrong.”

The case has received wide attention including from the New York Times.

Wu’s trial is expected to get started in a couple of weeks. You can read more in the Digital Journal.
