China Daily: ABC Apologizes for “Kill Everyone in China” Comment

CATEGORIES

Jimmy KimmelABC has issued an apology for offensive comments producers of Jimmy Kimmel Live allowed to air earlier this month, reports China Daily.

In a roundtable discussion with children, Kimmel asked the kids what they wanted to do about the government shutdown and the United States huge debt to China.

“Kill everyone in China,” a child replied.

“We would never purposefully broadcast anything to upset the Chinese community, Asian community, anyone of Chinese descent of any community at large,” the ABC said in its letter to SB Woo & 80-20, an Asian American civil rights organization dedicated to encouraging AAPIs to vote as a block. “Our objective is to entertain.”

ABC says it has removed the comment from all platforms and has promised to edit the comment out of any future airings of the program.

A petition on the We the People site on the White House website protesting the show had gathered 56,000 signatures. A demonstration had been scheduled for today in San Francisco outside the ABC owned station there.

  1. RE: ABC apologizes for “kill everyone in China comment on Jimmy Kimmel Live: I would imagine that a good deal of the blasé attitude that these kids have towards “killing everybody in China” is due to the manner in which we portray Asian people. The problem with Asian stereotypes is that a good deal of them are perceived as positive, so why is it even worth the energy to try and change things? “But you guys are good at math and you get the good jobs and you have excellent figures, what are you complaining about?” Sure, some of them are negative…:

… but ultimately it’s hard to convince people to see the error of their ways when their target is a so-called “model” minority. Never mind the fact that the pressure to be so much more successful often cultivates a higher rate of suicide..
