Many Chinatowns across the country have been abandoned by its Chinese population.
What’s left are curio shops and restaurants catering to tourists, according to CCTV.
But the largest and original Chinatown in San Francisco has so far fought that trend.
“This square is where it all began. The Chinese community fought to save this neighborhood and it’s the first Chinatown in the whole country. This is where Asian Americans began,” said reverend Norman Fong, executive director of Chinatown Community Development Center.
Fong’s group has worked to retain affordable housing in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
According to CCTV, Chinatown has retained its soul.
