Daily News: Push to make Lunar New Year official holiday in NY

Lunar New YearLunar New Year has become the unofficial skip day for many students in New York, reports the Daily News.

As a result, some are proposing making the day an official holiday.(photo by Colette Denali)

The idea is being pushed on both the local and state level.

“If you have a high concentration of Asian-American students, you’ll have high absenteeism on the Lunar New Year,” said Lois Lee, who directs an after-school program at PS 20.

  1. RE: Push to make Lunar New Year official holiday: If lunar new year is a school holiday in other Asian communities, they should contact the organizers in NY. It’s a “no brainer” as far as I’m concerned. Let’s not forget that Vietnamese & non Christian Korean celebrate lunar new year….
