Anti-affirmative action group wants to put scare in Democrats after SCA5

vote80-20, one of the most outspoken opponents of affirmative action in the Asian American community, has launched a Republican voter education drive.

The group is headed by SB Woo, a former Lieutenant Governor from Delaware in the 1980s. A former Democrat himself, Woo is now reportedly registered as an independent.

On 80-20’s website and in an email directed at the group’s  supporters in California, he wrote:

“To scare the Democratic Party, we should register as Republicans. If
10,000 more AsAms register as Republicans than Democrats
before June 3, both parties will compete to serve our rightful
interests. Officials from both parties SHALL become our public
servants. (Note: You can vote Democrat as a registered Republican. 80-
20 will like the privilege of making a recommendation to you
       when the elections occur.)

“To truly empower ourselves, we need to PUNISH 2 AsAm elected
officials, one Dem senator and one assemblyman, for their failure
to defend our interests during this SCA 5 episode. 80-20 will
       advise, when the time comes.”
It is true that in California’s open primary system, anybody can cross party lines and vote for anyone regardless of party. However, that does not apply to the Presidential primary. That means if a registered Republican in the last presidential primary wanted to vote for Barack Obama, they would not have been allowed to do so.

It’s also important to point out that not all Asian Americans oppose affirmative action, although recent media coverage might have you thinking otherwise.

KPCC reports that the hashtags #NotYourAffirmativeAction and #NoLiesNoHate has been trending among some Asian Americans.

In fact, the 2013 National Asian American Survey found Asian Americans support affirmative action by a 3-1 margin.

Karen Wang of Asian Americans Advancing Justice told KPCC that those who have grown up in the United States know that  “many of us are able to achieve what we’re able to achieve because we benefited from civil rights advancements that happened before us.”

What do you think. Do you support 80-20’s Republican voter registration drive?

  1. RE: Anti-affirmative action group wants to put the scare in Democrats after SCA5: I’m sure many people support traditional AA for African Americans and class-based AA for everyone. But try to tell parents that a kid who is not African American from a upper-middle-class neighborhood may, and just may, get preferential treatment when it comes to college admission, and we’ll see if the so-called 3:1 ratio remains.
