Golden West College in Hungtington Beach, California has confirmed one of its faculty members made racist comments to an Asian American family taking a neighborhood stroll in Long Beach.

Now for the first time, that faculty member herself has confirmed she was the one involved in the incident.

Her name is Tarin Olson, a counselor at the college, reported CBS2.

In the incident recorded by the family with their cell phone, Olson can be heard saying “you need to go back to your country.” When pressed by Tony Kao as he followed the woman while his wife recorded the incident, the woman responded “it’s not safe because there are too many people like you here…invading” and “you’re making my culture extinct.”

“I feel my perspective will be twisted if discussing the skewed video which cut out part of the incident.[…] If you would like to have a full normal interview about the displacement of European Americans then I gladly am available to enlighten the public,” Olson told CBS2.

Golden West released the following statement on Facebook.

We have a call into Golden West and will update this story when we know more.

Responding to an inquiry from a concerned citizen,Lorraine Prinsky, a trustee of the Coast Community College Board of Trustees wrote in an email, “I will forward it to the Chancellor. We have received many messages on this today and will find out the details.”

Kao has updated his Facebook post urging people to be civil.

“We have NO intention of seeking out or besmirching the offender’s personal life or career. It is our hope the offender is aware and apologetic for what she has said to us, but all we can do is hope. Although my post was about something negative, the message we want to convey is POSITIVE and that is to be respectful to one another no matter of what race, creed, or color. Please do not use my post to foster more feeling of anger or hatred because frankly there’s already enough of those feelings in this world. Thank you all again for truly caring for our well-being! Please share this post, thank you!”

  1. RE: Updated:College faculty member identifies self as One involved in racist incident in Long Beach:This guy should have never posted the video if he didn’t want to “besmirch” the offender. Also, this lady is a wackjob and clearly an entitled racist and should be fired. A person with reasoning and judgment that bad is not someone that should be in a counselor position.

  2. RE Updated: College Faculty member identifies herself as one involved in racist incident in Long Beach: I am sickened by what I saw. Hatred and racism should have no place in our educational institutions. Aside from the obvious and shameful faculty member, it begs the question of the type of education that minorities may receive when people like this are positions of authority. There are far better choices for personnel.
