Fraternity Under Investigation for Hazing Targeting Asian Students

University of Tennessee

A fraternity at the University of Tennessee is under investigation for targeting Asian students for hazing.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports an unnamed fraternity is being investigated for asking recruits to take pictures with often times unsuspecting Asian students as part of a scavenger hunt.

Jonathan Thomas, a leader with the Christian Asian American interVarsity and several other Asian groups on campus, said pictures were taken with mostly Asian girls.

Thomas says in the past three years, something like this has happened with other fraternities as well.

A bill introduced earlier this year in the state legislature would have banned fraternities and sororities at Tennessee’s state colleges and universities. That bill was sent to the education committee in February and remains there, despite the adjournment of the state legislature in April.

Concern over hazing has been mentioned as the motivation for the bill.
