Emmy-Winning Director Cary Fukunaga Defies Time & Reality with Bond 25 and Maniac

Cary Fukunaga

The first Asian American named to direct a James Bond film is doing his best to defy time.

Cary Fukunaga messed with both reality and the future with Maniac, his 10 episode mini-series on Netflix which the streaming service released on September 21.

Maniac took viewers to an altered state as confusion reigned about whether the show starring Jonah Hill and Emma Stone was set in the present or the future. As Digital Spy reported, we’re in “futuristic New York, sort of.”

With the upcoming Bond filmed tentatively titled Bond 25, Fukunaga is feeling a bit nostalgic.

He told the Philippine Daily Inquirer the theme song of his favorite Bond film, A View to a Kill, had an impact on him when he was younger.

“…To me, Duran Duran’s Bond theme song (titled the same as the movie) was probably one of the best Bond songs ever, because I love Duran Duran.”

Fukunaga also discussed his excitement to work with bringing back a blast from the past, actor Daniel Craig, into the Bond franchise.

“Daniel is an incredible actor. Outside of Bond, I have been a fan for years of his work. For me, he was the best part of Road to Perdition.”

Bond 25 is set for filming in March next year.

As for Maniac, it was never intended to come back for a season 2, but when asked about the possibility by The Hollywood Reporter, the 41-year-old director definitely didn’t rule it out.

“We can very easily figure out how to continue that story if Netflix wanted to, but we also wrote it to be complete in one season. Were it to be turned into other seasons, there are ways to look at sequels. But we weren’t necessarily looking at it in a classic multiseason television way, throwing up a bunch of juicy morsels like bait for people to tune in for another season. We really tried to — as much as possible — satisfyingly end the story by the end.”

Fukunaga’s other directing credits include Jane Eyre, Beasts of No Nation, and Sin Nombre.
