Netflix Updates Credits Following Criticism from Original ‘Mulan’ Star Ming-Na Wen

Netflix has remedied what a Hollywood star called a “major oversight” after a fan discovered the streaming credit listed no Asian Americans in the credits of Mulan.

Ming-Na Wen, the voice of the heroic Disney princess, Mulan, called the omission of BD Wong and her name by Netflix in the animated classic’s credits a “major oversight.” In fact, the streaming service failed to mention any lead Asian or Asian American voice actors in their credits for the movie.

Soon after Wen’s posting about the huge error on Netflix’s part, the streaming entity remedied their mistake, reports IndieWire.

“Thank you and @kroqkom so much for pointing this out to us!!,” Netflix wrote. They said “It’s now been fixed” before using a heart emoji and saying that Wen and Wong are “legends”.

Wen expressed her appreciation.

Great of you, @netflix, for the quick response and fix. ??
Appreciate your attention.

On the issues of movie credits, The New York Times reported that movie credits have “ballooned to their greatest lengths” in the past decade, but most credits are not contractually obligated.  Even with some end credits lasting five to ten minutes, there still are names left out on these already lengthy credit scores. For Netflix, their credit bar seldom features the entire cast and are comprised of mainly three to four individuals of the cast.

While Wen voiced the main Disney heroine over 25 years ago, she played her character again as ‘Mulan’ in Ralph Breaks The Internet and currently plays Melinda May in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

  1. RE: Netflix Updates Credits Following Criticism from Original Mulan Star Ming -Na Wen: Is that New York Times rationalizing/excusing Netflix for omitting the actors who played the main/featured characters of Mulan? If they only list 3-4 actors then certainly the main characters should be the ones, not the non-Asian actors. Too weird.
