A hearing is expected to be conducted by the end of the month into the relationship a senior officer in the Vancouver Police Department had with an officer who committed suicide, reports CTV News.
A second senior officer has already reportedly resigned.
Const. Nicole Chan died in January after nine years with the department and a personal battle with mental health issues.
Chan had reported the two officers in 2017 for having an inappropriate relationship with her.
“I believe that she felt pressured into it, and she was not in a good mental state to basically tell them no,” her sister Jenn Chan said to the Global News. “She felt like she couldn’t say no to them.”
Const. Chan went on stress leave after filing her complaint, but returned to the job six months later.
“She didn’t know how to return back to work since she felt no boss would want to work with her after coming forward with the complaint,” her sister said to the Vancouver Sun. “She has also told me that she felt she needed to maybe figure out what she wanted to do (career-wise) after this, since she didn’t trust the system and consequences.”
According to CTV News, Sgt. Greg McCulloch received a 15-day suspension for “entering into a relationship with Nicole knowing she was in a vulnerable state mentally and emotionally.” The Sun reports he has since resigned.
The investigation into Sgt. Van Patten has not been completed.
“There is an ongoing investigation in one case,” said Solicitor General Mike Farnworth to CTV News. “In the other that has been finished. I gather at the end of the month that disciplinary hearings start,” he said.
