A man who died trying to chase down thieves who stole his laptop from a Starbucks in Oakland, CA has been identified as 34-year old Shuo Zeng, reports CBS5.

His friends say they were scheduled to celebrate his 34th birthday the night of his death.

Witnesses say the thieves dragged Zeng as he tried to stop their vehicle before eventually falling out of the car.

Zeng’s family is coming from China to identify his body.

“We were actually going over to his place to celebrate New Year’s Eve, but he wasn’t there. We got there at 7 p.m. and were like, ‘Where is he?’ I think just a little after that, the police called us and told us that he passed away. It was also his birthday,” co-worker and friend Peter Tseng said to ABC7 News.

Two people have been arrested in the case.

According to CBS 5, Zeng immigrated from China to attend Kansas State University for graduate school. He worked as an engineer and research scientist for Aspera, an IBM company in Emeryville.

“I’m shocked. I’m completely shocked,” said Dana Schwartz, a neighbor of Zeng.

“It’s just hard, going to be hard on his family,” another neighbor said.
