Florida parents heckled a Chinese American school board member at a board meeting on Monday, May 3, The Washington Post reports.

The Santa Rosa County school board was discussing a mask requirement for schools. The uproar and objection from parents attending the meetings was loud.

A few parents heckled Chinese American board member Wei Ueberschaer, calling her a communist and insulting China.

“This is Santa Rosa County, not China,” the man said, according to The Washington Post.

Ueberschaer told The Washington Post that objections from the parents were so loud that she did not hear the insults being hurled toward her. She says if she has she would have rebuked the comments.

“We expect mutual respect and common courtesy from our students, so we expect the same from the adults who attend the school board meetings,” Ueberschaer told The Washington Post.

The remarks come as anti-Asian discrimination and violence continues throughout the country. Many Asian Americans have said that their racist abusers have called them communists. At the end of April, an Asian American family’s home was vandalized with phrases like, “GO HOME, Chinese communists.”
