Memorial Held for Sheriff Recruit David Nguyen, Who Was Shot and Killed on Freeway

Memorial services were held Monday for Alameda County Sheriff’s Office recruit David Nguyen, who was shot and killed while driving home on I-580 near the Bay Bridge toll plaza, KHRON 4 reports.

Nguyen was born in Vietnam but moved to America when he was young, ABC 7 reports. He grew up with his parents and younger sister in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood.

Family, friends and colleagues shared their memories of Nguyen.

“David was one in a billion, I knew our friendship would last a lifetime. Weeks before he left us, we would talk about being old men together. Having families of our own. It’s a shame we won’t be able to be old men together,” Isaac Demma, a fellow recruit said, according to ABC 7.

Nguyen’s sister Barbara said her brother would have loved seeing the support at his funeral.

“It is our duty to continue living his legacy. To be kind. Compassionate and take care of your loved one. Take care of the community. That’s what David would have wanted,” she told ABC 7.
