At least one person is dead and 5 injured including 4 critically, at a church in Orange County, reports NBC LA.
It happened during a meeting of Asian churchgoers at Geneva Presbyterian Church in what’s described as the retirement city of Laguna Woods.
One person is under arrest and is described by NBC News as someone of Asian descent.
Fox11 reports the arrest happened shortly after the shooting and that a gun has also been recovered that may have been used in the incident. He is described as a man in his 60s. Authorities during an evening news conference said two guns had been found.
Churchgoers managed to tie up the suspect and hold him before first responders could arrive.
About 40 people were inside including a group that belonged to a Taiwanese Church.
The Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church is listed on the Geneva Presbyterian Church’s website as being scheduled to have a meeting there at 10 a.m.
“The Presbytery of Los Ranchos is deeply saddened by a fatal shooting that occurred at a lunch reception …,” Tom Cramer, a co-executive at a network of Orange County Presbyterian churches, said in a statement. “Please keep the leadership of the Taiwanese congregation and Geneva in your prayers as they care for the those traumatized by this shooting. “
The shooting in Southern California happened one day after a gunman fired outside and in a supermarket, killing 10 people-most of them Black Americans.
