Joy Luck Club to get sequel. Original cast could return

Best-selling author Amy Tan and Rainman screenwriter Ron Bass are set to team up once again to work on a sequel to their 1993 hit Joy Luck Club, reports Variety.

Originally directed by Wayne Wang, the movie broke ground for its portrayal of a Chinese American family focused on the relationships between mother and daughter.

At this time, a director has not been announced for the project. The original cast which included Tamlyn Tomita, Rosalind Chao, Ming-Na Wen, Lauren Tom, Russell Wong, Tsai Chin, France Nuyen, Lisa Lu and Kieu Chinh are reportedly in talks to return.

According to Deadline, Joy Luck Club 2 the mothers become grandmothers and the daughters become mothers.

“We are excited to be teaming with Hyde Park and Jeff Kleeman in bringing to life the next generation of these four families so close to our hearts,” said Tan and Bass to Deadline.

Ashok Amritraj of Hyde Park Entertainment Group and Kleeman will join the producing team.

“I am thrilled to work with Amy, Ron and Jeff to bring this special film to the screen,” said Amritraj. “Now more than ever it is important to share authentic stories about the Asian American experience, and we believe this film will speak to wide audiences with its narrative rooted in humanity and connection.”

Joy Luck Club set the stage for the first television show to feature an Asian American cast. Margaret Cho’s All American Girl debut the following year, recalls Entertainment Weekly.
