LA Daily News: Asian American Filmmaking on the Upswing

CATEGORIES

Everything Before UsThe Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival which opens Thursday night has a distinctly Asian American flavor.

17 of the 32 feature documentary and narratives are from Asian American filmmakers. According to the LA Daily News, that’s a departure from the previous 30 years of the festival which gravitated toward international films from Asian countries.

“We’re seeing an uptick in Asian American cinema. Our community makes a lot of shorts (there are 102 of those in this year’s festival), but 17 features is a high number,” said festival co-director David Magdael.

Among the 17 Asian American films is the debut of Wong Fu Productions’ first feature, Everything Before Us. The romance is from popular You Tube stars Wesley Chan, Ted Fu and Philip Wang.

K-Town Cowboys, a popular web series, makes its west coast film debut this week. Also featured will be the closing night presentation Margarita, With a Straw.

For ticket and scheduling information, go to the festival’s website. You can find more festival highlights in the LA Daily News.
