Lieutenant General Paul Nakasone has unanimously been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the next director of the National Security Agency and commander of U.S. Cyber Command, reports the Federal Times.

Nakasone’s confirmation sailed through on a voice vote.

He is considered hawkish on cybersecurity saying he is prepared to “impose costs” on those who engage in cyberattacks against the United States.

Reuters reports that Nakasone does not think the U.S. response to cyberattacks has given adversaries such as Russia and China a reason to change their behavior.

He will replace retiring Admiral Mike Rogers who also had a dual hat role.

Some have advocated for the two positions to be separated, but Nakasone says he has no opinion on the matter.

Nakasone’s father is second generation Japanese American.
