Constance Wu Says Crazy Rich Asians Sequel May Have to Wait

Too much to do. Not enough time.

Constance Wu cautioned fans attending the Vulture Festival in Los Angeles they may have to wait a while for China Rich Girlfriend, the sequel to Crazy Rich Asians.

“I don’t know much about the production side of things,” Wu said, according to
Deadline. “But I know that Jon wants to direct the next one, and all next year he’s directing In The Heights.”

Jon, of course, is Jon Chu, the director tied to the franchise. Wu says he’s already committed to directing the big screen version of the Broadway hit, Into the Heights, from Lin Manuel Miranda.

As for Wu, she’s been connected to The Hustler at Scores with Jennifer Lopez. Wu says while there have been talks, she has not yet decided whether to participate in that project about a group of strippers who get back at some of their obnoxious Wall Street clients.

She doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to sign any new deals. She spends 9 months out of the year in production with Fresh Off the Boat.

As for Crazy Rich Asians, she revealed she convinced Chu to cut a line her character said in the book that she doesn’t date Asian guys, but Nick Young was the exception.

“I do think that that is a topic that should have some story and its own voice, but I think what we were trying to do with Crazy Rich Asians is take that away and in fact not even dignify that argument by putting it in there,” Wu said at Vulture Fest, according to Vulture. “In the book, I kind of thought it was used as a ploy. In the book she says wow, I’ve never dated Asian guys before, but Nick is different. To say somebody is an exception to the rule is to reaffirm the rule.”

Wu says she has dated White guys, but said it would be a mistake to assume she only dates White men.
