Shopper killed in robbery of his backpack in store parking lot

A 19-year-old man is dead after being shot in the face in a robbery of his backpack, reports PIX11.

It happened Thursday night in the parking lot of BJ’s Wholesale Club in Brooklyn.

Police identified the victim as Derreck Chen of Bensonhurst.

CBS New York reports the 18-year-old suspect tried to run from the scene, but was quickly apprehended.

Police describe both the victim and the suspects as shoppers.

“BJ’s Wholesale Club joins our Bath Beach community in mourning the loss of the victim and denouncing violence of any kind. The safety and security of our BJ’s members, team members and community is our top priority, and we are working with local authorities and security experts to ensure the safest environment,” the statement to CBS NY continued.

Both the victim and suspect got onto the third-floor elevator of the parking lot just before 10:15 p.m., according to ABC7.

Police say they recovered the gun used in the shooting.

Doctors pronounced Chen dead at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn.

Authorities describe the incident as random and do not believe the suspect knew Chen.
