Fiona Ma to run for Lieutenant Governor of California

Fiona Ma has officially announced her bid to become California’s Liuetenant Governor in 2026.

According to FOX 40, she announced her decision to run in a press release on Wednesday.

“With more than two decades of experience in public office, I am uniquely qualified to be California’s second-highest ranking elected official — where I will continue to be a powerful advocate for improving our state’s housing supply, environment, education systems and economy,” Ma said in the press release.

Ma, a member of the Democratic party, has served as California’s State Treasurer since 2019. She is the first woman of color and the first female Certified Public Accountant (CPA) to hold the position. According to KCRA 3, she would be California’s first Asian American lieutenant governor if elected.

The veteran politician has served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and represented the 19th District in the California Assembly for 6 years.

In 2021, Ma was sued by Judith Blackwell, the executive director of the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee. She alleged that Ma sexually harassed her and wrongfully terminated her before replacing her with a less qualified Caucasian candidate. Blackwell is a black woman.

Ma denied the allegations and called the claims “baseless.” Despite the lawsuit, she was re-elected in 2022 as State Treasurer. Now she hopes to become lieutentant government and address important social issues.

“California needs proven leadership to take on bold action to meet our ambitious climate change and energy goals, level the playing field and attract better quality jobs for all Californians while expanding access to healthcare, housing and education,” Ma said in the press release.
