Fresh Off the Boat Takes New Twists in Season 5

Fresh Off the Boat Season 5 Premier

Fresh off the Boat enters its fifth season on its new night, Friday, this week on ABC.

Randall Park looks back in amazement. He tells ET, he had no expectations the show would last this long.

“When we did the pilot, I hoped we do a good pilot. I didn’t even expect the pilot to be picked up as a series,” he told Entertainment Tonight Canada. “Especially at that time, there was no show like it. There hadn’t been a show like it in over 20 years. ..we just kept getting picked up. Got picked up again and now we’re on season 5. It’s wild.”

Some might argue the success of Crazy Rich Asians on the big screen would not have been possible without the success of Fresh Off the Boat on the small screen.

Nahnatchka Khan, the show’s creator and executive producer, told TV Insider she hopes this is only the beginning.

“We want there to be more,” she said. “There are more stories to tell. There are more types of stories in different venues and formats. To see a theatrical release, romantic comedy doing so well and be so well received is gratifying. Let’s keep it going. Let’s keep it rolling.”

One of the big additions to the show this year is a Chinese American family moving down the street from the Huangs. No longer are they the only Asians on the block. The new neighbors (Ming Na Wen, Jimmy Yang and Reggie Lee) are going to have a big impact on Louis (Randall Park) and Jessica (Constance Wu)

“They’ve been praying for this day since they’ve moved to the all-white suburbs,” said Khan to TV Insider.
“That’s going to be an interesting thing now that there is more than one, how does that impact everybody? Are you going to be friends just because you’re the same ethnicity and race? Does that bond you immediately or is there more to it than that?”

This season will also focus on the maturation of Eddie (Hudson Yang) and the rest of the children.

“In this season, they’re really growing up and experience their journey outside of the family. My character Louis who’s so attached to the family has to deal with this and the thought and realization that these kids are eventually going to be gone,” Park said to ET.
